Product Overview

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)

If you live in a state where Water Hyacinth are prohibited we recommend Sensitive Plant (Neptunia aquatica) or Giant Sensitive Plant (Aeschynomeme fluitans) as alternatives. Water hyacinths CANNOT BE SHIPPED TO: AL, AR, AZ, CA, FL, LA, MS, PR, SC, TX, WI - Will be substituted or cancelled. Never release these plants into public lakes or waterways. Know your state laws.

Water Hyacinth floating pond plant is a beautiful plant for the water garden. This pond plant has beautiful lavender-blue flowers, with fleshy, rounded leaves. Water Hyacinth is a prolific grower and will spread across the waters' surface providing shade and coverage for the water gardens inhabitants. Water Hyacinths are excellent for filtration because their roots absorb nutrients out of the water that might otherwise cause algae. The long black roots of the water hyacinth provide spawning places for fish and create a hiding place for baby fish. Water Hyacinth grow best in full sun to part shade and need water temperatures to be 65 degrees before adding them to your water garden in the spring. As they spread during the warm months, if you find you have an over abundance of them, simply net some out of the water garden and use them for compost in your flower beds or vegetable garden. The leaves and roots are full of nutrients and make great compost or mulch--as mulch they help retain moisture in the ground, moderate soil temperature, and inhibit weed seed germination.

This popular floating plant will not survive a hard winter freeze, and most pond owners replace them yearly because of their great ability to keep the pond water clean and help fight algae naturally. Water Hyacinths are also a good choice for container water gardens, as they are easy to grow and pair well with larger marginal plants in the background.

    Water hyacinths

Posted by Janice on May 8th 2019

It is too early to rave about hyacinths, I loved them last year because they completely cover the surface in a relatively short time and this protects my fish. All the plants have thrived. I just wish they were perennials! The water poppys look fantastic so I am hopeful they too will thrive.

Absolutely delighted -- the hyacinth is quite charming and the dragonflies are entirely enamoured of it.
