Description

Water Hyacinths (Eichornia crassipes)

If you live in a state where Water Hyacinth are prohibited we recommend Giant Sensitive Plant as an alternative.

Water Hyacinth floating pond plant is a beautiful plant for the water garden. This pond plant has beautiful lavender-blue flowers, with fleshy, rounded leaves. Water Hyacinth is a prolific grower and will spread across the waters' surface providing shade and coverage for the water gardens inhabitants. Water Hyacinths are excellent for filtration because their roots absorb nutrients out of the water that might otherwise cause algae. The long black roots of the water hyacinth provide spawning places for fish and create a hiding place for baby fish. Water Hyacinth grow best in full sun to part shade and need water temperatures to be 65 degrees before adding them to your water garden in the spring. As they spread during the warm months, if you find you have an over abundance of them, simply net some out of the water garden and use them for compost in your flower beds or vegetable garden. The leaves and roots are full of nutrients and make great compost. This popular floating plant will not survive a winter freeze, and most pond owners replace them yearly because of their great ability to keep the pond water clean and help fight algae naturally. Water Hyacinths are also a good choice for container water gardens, they are easy to grow and pair well with larger marginal plants in the background.

    Water hyacinths

These are already in my pond and blooming beautifully. I ordered them on July 16th; they came into bloom on July 24th. I was apprehensive when these arrived in a dinged box on an excruciatingly hot day. The plants were protected in plastic inside but were so warm, I was afraid they had literally cooked. Not so!! I am delighted to find this source for pond plants. Highly recommend.

Healthy plants arrived very fast via USPS. These grow quickly to keep the water clear. The blooms are a plus!

Came just as big and looking identical to fogbit in my pond so we will see if it’s water hyacinth or frog bit.

These plants came as fresh and vibrant delivered as though I brought them home myself. Though it’s too early to see how these plants will thrive, the plants I got last year all grew and multiplied with no problem.

    Water hyacinths

It is too early to rave about hyacinths, I loved them last year because they completely cover the surface in a relatively short time and this protects my fish. All the plants have thrived.
I just wish they were perennials! The water poppys look fantastic so I am hopeful they too will thrive.
