Product Overview

Frogbit (Limnobium spongia)

Frogbit is a small floating plant (usually 2-4"), well suited for container water gardens and smaller water features. The green heart shaped leaves resemble a miniature waterlily and float on the surface. It multiplies quickly in warm weather with runners like a strawberry plant, which helps shade the surface and remove nutrients from the water. If crowded its stems will elongate, and leaves that grow out of the water will resemble a floating mat of baby water poppy. To prevent crowding, simply remove excess plants from the pond, which also helps to remove the nutrients they have absorbed. Frogbit forms buds that sink to the bottom of the pond to winter over until spring.

Frogbit (Limnobium spongia)
Hardiness Zones: 4-10
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Part Shade. May sunburn in full sun in hot dry climates. Gets larger in part shade.
Height: 1/2" - 1" unless crowded
Water Depth: Floating Surface Pond Plant

    pretty much dead

Frog bit was sparse and never looked right. It has since all but died. This is usually a very prolific plant.

I thought I was buying something else. On that note I'm not sure how this plant is supposed to look or grow. But it didn't look like I received the amount I ordered and I'm still waiting (a week later) for them to do something more than look like a dead weed.

    May Contain Duckweed

Posted by Alyssa on Aug 18th 2016

I bought 3 species of plant from here at the same time--a lily, frogbit, and some valisneria. One of these little lovelies brought some Stowe away giant duckweed spores. This was not really a problem for me because I'd quarantined the plants (and my goldfish would have made short work of duckweed anyway), but I thought I'd mention it. My frogbit survived the trip, and, after a few weeks took off great. My chief complaint is that the frogbit they sent only had adult leaves--the kind that lack the spongey bottom and have trouble floating or maintaining orientation. It didn't cause me to lose too many leaves, but it did stress me out a bit.

Received plants in good condition, even though the cardboard box was almost completely crushed! Was a little worried until I opened the package and inspected plants. All is good!

THIS IS A HEARTY PLANT FOR COLORADO. I HAVE HAD THEM FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS AND THEY ARE GROWING LIKE CRAZY. THIS IS A GREAT PLANT FOR FISH SHADE AND THE TURTLES LOVE IT FOR PROTECTION ALSO. I WOULD HIHGLY RECOMEND THIS PLANT FOR ANY WATER FEATURE.
